REFLECTION

A soil, a mirror and a monument.
The soil is a wide esplanade directed towards Manhattan.
The mirror is a « street furniture strip » made of mirror polished stainless steel.
The monument is a communal space for the diverse surrounding communities.

We propose to channel the traffic volume on a large « european avenue » in the east of the plaza. In the west, we create a park where the lane used to be. This new circulation network enables us to arrange on the Grand Army Plaza « a soil, a mirror and a monument ». Soil : We propose to create a wide esplanade directed towards Manhattan and covered with cobblestone (traffic-calming measure). It’s visually and physically unite all the public space together, Prospects Park – the Brooklyn Public library – the Bailey Fountain – The Arch, and subway stations. Mirror : No man’s Land : foot traffic is discouraged by poor design. We propose to create a « street furniture strip » made of mirror polished stainless steel. It reflects the sky and the new park. Invisible and duplicator. It protects pedestrians from cars. Calm and safety. The mirror is made up of tables, windows, terraces, kiosks and pavilions which can be rented by artists or storekeepers. Life and Culture. Monument : We propose to build a communal space for the diverse surrounding communities. On an ornamental lake, 51 star-shaped posts rise towards the sky to a mirror polished stainless steel platform. They seem infinite. The monument offers a panoramic view. Under the ornamental lake, a memorial, foundation of the monument.
